Chester

Back in England our tour stopped at the ancient walled city of Chester. It was founded in AD 79 by the Romans to defend the fertile land beyond it from attacks coming up the River Dee.
The main streets of Chester are now lined by black and white timber buildings, some dating back to 13th to 14th centuries. These are known as the Chester Row and are comprised of two tiers of shops with a continuous upper gallery. They are the fore-runners of today's multi-storey shops.

The facade of a building with its decorative timber-work and oriel windows, typical of the buildings along Eastgate Street. They give the impression of the what town life wolud have been like during medieval times.

Looking towards Eastgate which is adorned by an wrought-iron clock.

Chester's clocktower was erected in 1897.

Part of the town walls. Originally built by the Romans, they have rebuilt at intervals during the follwing centuries.
