The Pantheon

The Pantheon is the only architectural relic from imperial Rome that has remained intact.Originally built by Agrippa in 27-25 B.C., it was rebuilt by Empperor Hadrian between 120 and 125 A.D. It was consecrated as a church in 608 by Pope Boniface IV and still holds regular services.

Buried in the Pantheon are some of Italy's great artists. Chief among these is Raphael. He was named architect-in-chief by Pope Leo X of the new St. Peter's at the Vatican. He was also given absolute over all monuments, buildings and ruins within a ten mile radius of Rome.
Also buried here are Vittorio Emanuele II and Umberto I two kings who ruled Italy after the unification.
